Writing Retreats

Writing retreats are perfect for clients or faculty groups who have large amounts of data from which they would like to produce multiple manuscripts, in a timely manner. Retreats can last anywhere from a long weekend to five business days. Before traveling to the client site, I provide a list of deliverables, including instruction about manuscript preparation; the division of data into multiple manuscripts; drafting of a certain number of manuscripts; and projections/goals for how long it will take to produce finished manuscripts that are ready for submission.

During the writing retreats, depending on the faculty's comfort level with manuscript preparation, I provide a presentation in which I describe the elements of a manuscript and tips for writing. The writing retreats entail dedicated time (usually five business days, or perhaps a long weekend) during which the faculty can provide time to write. We literally bring our laptops and sit around large conference tables that are equipped with enough electrical outlets for everyone and, ideally, internet access. It is rare that the entire faculty will be able to dedicate an entire week simultaneously, but usually, people are able to dedicate enough time to: a) start drafting the manuscripts they are responsible for; b) have individual consultation with me; c) provide me with manuscripts to edit and comment on (or, instruct me so I can create drafts that they can edit and comment on).

Writing retreats are very collaborative. During the week, I work on manuscripts, give them back to the authors for more revision and polishing, and then work on them again. It is a very intense period of productivity. Below are the publications resulting from these writing retreats, to date:
